Adding music and syncing counts

Adding your music lets you hear the show while your drill plays back. DrillFlo plays the music from the start of the track when your drill starts, and moves through it using each page’s counts and tempo. Here’s how to add it and line it up.

  1. Open Audio Settings. In the menu bar, click Project, then click Audio.

  2. Choose your file. Click Choose audio file, then pick an audio file from your computer. You’ll see Processing audio… Please wait. while it uploads. If your drill already has music, the button says Choose new audio file, and the new file replaces the old one.

  3. Check the waveform. When the upload finishes, your music shows up as a waveform under Edit Audio.

Your drill starts at the very beginning of the track. If there’s silence or an intro before your first move, trim it off so the music lines up with your counts.

  1. Find the start of your first move. The highlighted part of the waveform is the section you’ll keep. It starts out covering the whole track. Click the play button to listen to the highlighted part. The time next to it shows where you are and how long the track is.

  2. Drag the edges. Drag the left edge of the highlighted part to where count 1 of your first move begins. Drag the right edge to where your show ends. Under the waveform, Selected shows the start and end times. You can also drag the whole highlighted part to move it.

  3. Click Trim. DrillFlo cuts the music to the highlighted part and uses the trimmed version for your drill. You can listen to it under Trimmed Audio Preview.

  4. Click Save Changes. Your music is saved as soon as it uploads or is trimmed, so this just closes the window.

Each move lasts as long as its page’s Counts at its Tempo. To keep your drill with the music:

  1. Set the tempo. Go to each page and set Tempo in the top bar to the beats per minute of the music during that move. If your music changes tempo, change it on the page where the new tempo starts.

  2. Set the counts. Set Counts to the number of counts in each move. See Adding a page to a drill for more on counts and tempo.

  3. Play it back. Press the spacebar to play your drill with the music. If a move ends early or late, adjust the counts or tempo for that page and play it again. See Navigating pages and playing back a drill.

  • Add music when you start. You can also add music when you create a new drill. See Starting a new drill document.
  • Trimming starts over from your current file. If you trim again, you’re trimming the version you already trimmed. To start fresh, choose your original file again.
  • Music in your videos. When you export a video, you can include your music. See Exporting a drill as video.
